Shake Sugaree began over a decade ago, when Peter Hicks, vocals, guitars, Dobro, mandolin and blues harp and Steve Gadd, vocal guitars, banjo and ukulele, got together to play a unique local mixture of blues, ragtime, swing and bluegrass music. The original duo took roots music styles and added local and contemporary references and a lot of anarchic whimsy.
The original duo soon attracted other musicians eager to explore this idiom. The band added Chris John on fiddle and featured many other players over the years joining on drums, bass, fiddles, banjo and accordion. The band then expanded its program by playing for Square dances, Contras, Jitterbug and other American style dances while continuing to establish a national reputation as a concert bands at many of Australia's top festivals and roots music venues.
Their only cd, Huon Delta Blues sold out shortly after its release almost a decade ago after receiving enthusiastic reviews from as far and wide as Perth, Poland and Portugal. It is now considered a collectors item.
These days Shake Sugaree still perform as a duo but also expand to include Chris John and Marjorie Gadd on fiddles and Nigel Hope on upright bass when required for dances, parties and other functions.
